The policy on freedom of speech seems to be strong – with the normal safeguards, without excessive heavy handedness which could threaten some societies more than others. Practically, the pro-life society has also functioned with little impediment.

Regarding freedom of speech, the University states, “The right to exercise freedom of speech/ freedom of expression is a fundamental right which all members of the University community are entitled to exercise. However, while this right is enshrined in European and domestic law, it is not absolute… the University requires all members of the University community to exercise the right to freedom of expression in a manner that does not bring the University or anyone connected with it into disrepute.”

Each room booking is “assessed on its own merits”, while the University receives applications from external speakers to deliver speeches. The University states that “each application is assessed to identify any likely issues from a safety and security perspective, and potentially whether any conditions should be imposed to ensure that a diversity of views is represented…” However, “such assessments are not mandatory for each application, and are undertaken on a case by case basis taking into account all relevant circumstances.”

The University is “fully committed to respect and fair treatment for everyone, eliminating discrimination and actively promoting equality of opportunity and delivering fairness to all.” Within the listed protected characteristics are Religion or Belief (including non-belief).

St Andrews Students for Life has existed for some time and operates with few problems. They host events on University property, hold bake sales by the library, and seem to have little conflict with the University or Students Union.
